In 15 seasons of Sister Wives, there have been many examples of unhealthy behavior in the Browns’ relationship. The problem is bigger than just Kody.
Kody Brown has managed to earn some fans through his TLC show, Sister Wives, but the overwhelming majority of the audience tends to side with Kody’s four wives. Meri, Janelle, Christine, and Robyn are becoming more and more unhappy, and rumors of wives leaving Kody are becoming more and more common. While all of the wives are clinging to their polygamous marriage so far, viewers are becoming more vocal, urging the wives to leave Kody in the dust, and they may have a point.
The polygamous lifestyle is arranged to put the husband’s needs above all else. The wives have to share and be faithful to one husband, while he can take on as many wives as he chooses. It’s an unequal relationship, which is never going to be a happy one. Christine’s aunt, Kristyn Decker, has spoken out against polygamy after leaving her polygamous marriage. As Kristyn told Radar Online, “The men will be the leaders. The men are the ones who bring the women to heaven if they qualify. The final decisions are with the men. If any of those women wanted to have another man, they couldn’t. It’s not an equality or equal system.”

Christine herself has explained how, despite their ideal of the sister wives relationship, there is still incredible jealousy. In the Brown family’s autobiography, Christine discussed the time when Kody married Robyn, saying, “I’d never thought I’d feel such a sense of loss and such crippling jealousy, I thought I was better and stronger than that.” The fact that Christine sees the jealousy of her husband marrying another woman as a weakness in herself paints the clearest picture of the unhealthiness of the polygamous lifestyle. Kody is asking each of his wives to suppress their emotions so he can have relationships with other women and, at the same time, expect them to be 100% faithful to him.
What’s more, Kody has shown he is not willing to work to improve or even maintain his relationships when they get hard. During season 15, Kody and Meri celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary. Viewers watched their cringeworthy date as Meri attempted to make a connection with Kody and Kody did everything he could to shut it down. He then went on to suggest to Meri that, while he would never ask for a divorce from his wives, she should choose to divorce him. It is not praise-worthy that Kody isn’t going to instigate a divorce if the alternative is not working on his relationship and trying to convince the other person to instigate a divorce. If Kody is willing to let his relationship with Meri languish, then the same will eventually happen to the other wives.
All of Kody’s rules and attempts to run his multiple households haven’t helped him achieve the one big, happy family he wants. Sister Wives has shown the Browns are not only living in a non-traditional relationship, but a dysfunctional one as well. Being in this lifestyle isn’t the best thing for the women or for Kody. He constantly seems confused as to why his wives are so unhappy. Perhaps if all of the wives left, it would give Kody a chance to examine polygamy and his actions and be able to grow into the kind of man who can have a healthy relationship.
