Round8 Studio has just announced Lies of P, a twisted adaptation of Pinocchio inspired by soulslike games such as Bloodborne.
A new action role-playing game titled Lies of P, inspired by the tale of Pinocchio and by soulslike games such as Bloodborne, has recently been announced. The game is said to put a dark twist on the classic fairy tale and feature a unique system which takes advantage of the character’s lies. The soulslike genre, which was born from FromSoftware’s 2009 release Demon’s Souls, has risen to become a prominent gaming subgenre.
The soulslike genre is fairly niche, known for its high difficulty and indirect storytelling, but it has risen in popularity thanks to memorable titles such as Bloodborne and Nioh. Many modern action role-playing games, such as 2019’s Stars Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, borrow elements from the subgenre while still maintaining wide appeal and accessibility. Fallen Order features the deep combat system and free exploration of a typical FromSoftware release, but the title was also praised for including an interesting narrative and lighthearted tone befitting of the Star Wars franchise. While many fans crave a true new Dark Souls experience, reports indicate that FromSoftware’s highly-anticipated upcoming title Elden Ring has been delayed until 2022. The project will see director Hidetaka Miyazaki, the creator of genre staples such as Dark Souls and Bloodborne, team up with novelist George R. R. Martin to create an open-world role-playing adventure.
An announcement trailer for Lies of P, a soulslike game inspired by Pinocchio and developed by Round8 Studio, has been released on IGN‘s official YouTube channel. The trailer is entirely cinematic, focusing on the game’s story and aesthetic rather than gameplay. A report from IGN explains that the announcement trailer takes place before the events of the game and is narrated by an unnamed character who is not the protagonist. The report also reveals that Lies of P will feature a unique “lie system” which allows the main character’s words to directly affect gameplay. The trailer’s gothic city setting, combined with the title’s supposedly soulslike gameplay, draws many parallels to FromSoftware’s 2015 release Bloodborne.
While little information on Elden Ring has been released by FromSoftware since the game’s 2019 announcement, the soulslike genre is far from stagnant. A recent remake of Demon’s Souls, developed by Bluepoint Games and released as a PlayStation 5 launch title, was met with critical praise from both critics and fans. The remake, which perfectly captured the original release’s gameplay while bringing its graphics into the modern age, was the most-downloaded video game of 2020 in Japan.
The soulslike genre is fairly niche, but the subgenre’s design philosophies tend to attract a large amount of independent game developers. The world of Round8’s Lies of P is bizarre and intriguing, and its strong Bloodborne connections should draw a lot of interest from fans of the From Software classic. While many gamers will need to see gameplay before they are truly invested in the upcoming title, Lies of P certainly appears to be worth fans’ attention.
