Darth Vader #12 promises to reveal how Darth Vader learned about the man who shot him down during the Battle of Yavin: Han Solo himself.
A new entry into the Darth Vader series of comic books will show a never-before-seen event in Star Wars lore: Darth Vader’s history with Han Solo. Darth Vader #12, penned by writer Greg Pak with art by Guiu Vilanova and cover art Aaron Kuder, pledges to reveal a long-awaited story between two of the sci-fi franchise’s most legendary characters. The issue is presented as a prelude to the huge upcoming War of the Bounty Hunters crossover event, and is set to go on sale May 26th, 2021.
Darth Vader and Han Solo famously share few scenes together in the original Star Wars trilogy. The two characters come from different corners of the galaxy (in terms of location and upbringing), and Solo’s story rarely intersects with the larger Force-themed mythical elements of the films, even as their skillsets are somewhat similar. But fate (and the Force) has a habit of bringing people together in Star Wars, and Vader and Han are no exception. How exactly did Vader first learn of the infamous smuggler?

Darth Vader #12 promises to shed some light on the connection between the Sith Lord formerly known as Anakin Skywalker and the man known as Han Solo. Promotional materials reveal that Vader will face “…the horrors of reconstruction in the secret laboratories of CORUSCANT” after his rebellion against Emperor Palpatine. “As he blacks out under the knife, does he still dream of revenge against his master? Or do this thoughts drift towards his son – and the friends who make LUKE SKYWALKER so vulnerable? Don’t miss this next critical new chapter in Vader’s ongoing evolution – featuring the revelation of the first time the Dark Lord learned the name HAN SOLO!”
The preview shines a light on Vader’s tactics to find Luke after the destruction of the first Death Star. It would certainly be a technique of a Sith Lord to strike fear into the hearts of their targets by attacking their friends and loved ones first. In The Empire Strikes Back, Vader very famously arrives at Cloud City just before Leia, Han and Chewbacca – no doubt knowing that Lando Calrissian and Solo used to be close. Sowing distrust among friends is undoubtedly another Dark Side strategy. Perhaps this issue contains an event in which Vader discovers Han is reckless, arrogant – and perfectly suited to bait a trap.
It appears Vader is specifically targeting Luke’s friends in order to flush him out. Star Wars fans know that Vader is adept at trapping foes (some of which he learned from the Emperor’s tactics himself) and using fear to intimidate his enemies. Readers will find out exactly how he discover’s Han Solo‘s own weaknesses in Darth Vader #12, available in May 26th.
